1. What got you started with this brand? What was your inspiration? What is the idea/concept behind it?
I have an indoor pet rabbit that I love and spoil way too much; she makes me the happiest and her name is Roo. She is the inspiration behind all this. It all started in quarantine when I was stuck at home and I found myself exploring the idea of creating a brand that was named after my bunny. Rookie is one of the many nicknames I call my Roo, so I thought why not use it for the brand name.
In a way, I wanted to share the happiness I got from her to people and what better way to do that than with colors! This is when I decided to do tie dyes also because at the time, no one else in Cebu was doing it. The idea behind the whole thing revolves around the saying “there’s no bunny else like you.” Every piece of clothing and item we produce in Rookie has been personally hand dyed by me.
2. What is your personal favorite product from your brand?
Since I launched in June, I’ve done a couple of collaborations and have also explored different items such as bucket hats, tank tops, etc., but I think right now my favorite product would have to be our tie dye shirts. I think it’s one that’s a staple and also something everyone and anyone can enjoy no matter how old or young. My 90 year old grandpa even wears one and it really looks good on him!
3. What do you want people to experience with your brand/product(s)?
In some way I see my work in Rookie as a form of art. From the color splashes to how they set, everything kind of just comes together somehow. I want people to feel good in the shirts the same way the colors in them can bring some kind of brightness in our often dull days.
4. What tips and advice can you give to entrepreneurs who are just starting out or are planning to start their own brand?
I think it’s so important to work hard and really do something you enjoy because it makes all the difficult and stressful times worth it. Don’t be afraid to start something because you’ll never really know until you try.
5. What’s next for your brand?
Right now we’ve been working on a lot of new products to bring out to the public soon and we’re also trying to cater to another market–children. So soon we will be launching adult sweatshirts and kid’s tees.
6. What other additional information and details would you like to share?
We are a Cebu-based brand, but we ship worldwide.
