1. What got you started with this brand? What was your inspiration? What is the idea/concept behind it?
After I discovered my love for candles, I wanted to make a candle with scents I loved. I researched and did candle experiments, but I was also looking to make something that had a unique look to it. I realized I didn’t have to look far when I figured that I could look at our local natural resources, like the coconut. When I made my first coconut candle, I realized I had made something so Filipino; I was proud of it, I felt connected to it, I felt that others might feel the same way.
2. What is your personal favorite product from your brand?
I go through cycles of favorites among my children (aka my candles hehehe), but right now it’s “Rest Easy,” which is a blend of Lavender and Vanilla. It’s a deeply calming, sweet-floral scent that I always look for at the end of a long day of work. When the aroma fills the room, it really helps put my mind at ease, and I’ve had people tell me their same experience with this scent too.
In both BaO Candles & Gunita wax melts, what I really love is the sweet honey undertones of beeswax, which I didn’t find in any other wax I experimented with.
3. What do you want people to experience with your brand/product(s)?
I want people to experience their own space in their mind where they can find peace, away from all the crazy things that’s happening today! It’s important to let the mind rest and recover from the noise of the day, and sometimes lighting a candle, surrounding yourself in a calm scent, really helps you do just that.
I also want people to remember the beautiful things our country produces, like the beautiful baos (coconut shells) I use for the candles.
4. What tips and advice can you give to entrepreneurs who are just starting out or are planning to start their own brand?
Before I launched BaO, I looked up all the advice “successful” entrepreneurs gave, but at the end of the day, no one can truly advise you on a path you’re forging for yourself. Don’t fret about mistakes you might make because you’ll have to go through them anyway–and hopefully come out stronger and wiser. Don’t worry about the things you don’t know either! Just take the first few steps to create something you love, then everything else will follow. Isaiah 41:10 says, “Do not be afraid, I am with you.”
5. What’s next for your brand?
I’m so excited to announce I’ll be coming out with BaO’s own line of matchsticks! I’ve always loved colored matchsticks, so I’m very excited to share it with you all when it comes out.
