1. What got you started with this brand? What was your inspiration? What is the idea/concept behind it?
My sister and I started La Rosa in 2018 when we were both still college students. We both lived in dorms and were only home on the weekends so managing our new, small business wasn’t easy–getting at least 5 orders a month would be a big deal for us.
Our mom’s love for accessories is actually what started it all. She owns her own jewelry line, and being the businesswoman that she is, persuaded us to start our own brand. She helped come up with the name La Rosa, which I believe is a play on her name (Rosario). With her help, we were able to launch La Rosa in an instant. I would always say that our house is like a factory–our living room turned into a storage area with boxes of beads and samples everywhere. We would sell some of our mom’s samples or our own designs if we had the time to make a few pieces. There were a few instances when both my sister and I got so busy with school that our Instagram page became inactive for a while.
When I finally graduated from college, I was able to focus more on the brand while at the same time working a full-time job. We decided to expand and go beyond Instagram by consigning in retail stores and joining bazaars. From getting at least 5 orders on Instagram when we first started, we were able to grow the brand and get more and more orders and followers as months passed. Still, balancing a full-time job (while my sister was a senior in college) and a side hustle was very challenging. Being in the office for 9+ hours every weekday meant very little time to focus on La Rosa. It was when the quarantine started that I told myself I want to focus more on La Rosa and grow the brand. With the work-from-home situation, I had more time to plan and strategize. From March 2020 to now, we’ve gained thousands of new followers and experienced an increase in monthly orders. We even started La Rosa Home just a few months ago because we saw the opportunity and the potential in online selling and home accessories (my sister manages La Rosa Home now while I manage the accessories account).
2. What is your personal favorite product from your brand?
It’s honestly so hard to pick! But for me personally, I love all of our pearl pieces. Pearls are such a classic wardrobe staple that elevates your look in an instant.
If I were to pick one piece, it would be the Clara Pearl Necklace.
3. What do you want people to experience with your brand/product(s)?
A lot of times, women don’t think of accessories when putting together a look. I was the same until La Rosa started. I would be fine with wearing just a pair of simple pearl studs and a watch. Then I started making accessories–and wearing them. I started getting so excited thinking about what accessories to match with my outfit. There’s just something about topping off any outfit with the right accessories that make me feel more confident and empowered.
This is what I want people to experience with La Rosa–to be excited about pieces that help them feel more confident and empowered. I also want people to be able to express themselves through the accessories they wear, which is why I love taking custom-made orders/special requests.
4. What tips and advice can you give to entrepreneurs who are just starting out or are planning to start their own brand?
You will encounter many challenges and make a lot of mistakes, for sure. But always remember to learn from them. They will help you make better decisions and become a better business owner.
5. What’s next for your brand?
Grow our online presence, continue creating new designs, and probably diversify our product assortment.
6. What other additional information and details would you like to share?
Most of our products are carefully handmade, which is why we observe a lead time of 2 to 4 days. We also accept custom-made orders/special requests. You may find La Rosa in Frankie and Friends General Store (SM Aura and Powerplant Mall) and Retail Lab (Powerplant Mall).
